A farming family in Montana comes across others encroaching on their land. Forrie J. Smith, who plays Lloyd, is a seasoned individual in the world of rodeo. John Dutton (Kevin Costner) often seems to “forget” what he’s saying, losing his Montana accent and reverting to the Southern California speaking voice he normally uses… Featured in WatchMojo: The 10 Best TV Shows of the Summer That Are Off Your Radar (2018). (Review is for the first two seasons only) I didn’t expect to like the series, but the story, acting, and camerawork are great. Basically, it’s mafia wars in Montana with huge doses of testosterone at times (cowboys with guns on horseback fishing)! Costner is a master actor in the lead role of the Duttons. The show is at its best when it shows how the chessboard moves according to the Duttons and their enemies. The show gets dark early in the second season but picks up again midway through. Kelsey Asbille is the weakest link in the role of Monica and performs poorly, the plot falters and the acting just goes unnoticed. I think Cole Hauser is the strongest actor in the role of Rip (aside from Costner himself) and looked forward to all the scenes Rip was in. Thomas Rainwater is also great. The story hums and the scenery is beautiful. Just like Cormac McCarthy’s All The Pretty Horses was a bit rougher and gritty than the title suggests, this show falls in a similar vein. I highly recommend it and wish I hadn’t waited so long to watch it.
