The city of New Rome is pitted against a duel between Caesar Catilina, a brilliant artist who advocates for a utopian future, and the greedy mayor Franklyn Cicero. Among them is Julia Cicero, whose loyalties are divided between her father and her lover. Francis Ford Coppola wrote the screenplay in the early 1980s, but the film was put on the back burner partly because of its financial debts. Pre-production finally began in 2001 after shooting 30 hours of second-unit footage and holding a table read with Paul Newman, Uma Thurman, Robert De Niro, James Gandolfini, Nicolas Cage, Leonardo DiCaprio, Russell Crowe, Edie Falco, and Kevin Spacey, but the project was scrapped after the September 11 attacks because a scene in the script (page 166) “foreshadowed” the attacks. Coppola abandoned the project entirely in 2007 and did not resume development until 2019. At 21:40, the character of Catiline says the phrase “Holy Jesus Christ!” in shock. Yet, in-universe, the city of New Rome is derived from a culture based on Roman mythology (for example: at 54:47, it is dedicated to Vesta; at 01:55:51, someone says “The will of Cronus”, or at 01:56:49, a statue of Saturn is prominently displayed, while there are many other depictions of Roman deities). In this universe, Christianity does not exist. There is no reason why Catiline would use the phrase “Holy Jesus Christ!” and in such a context.. Caesar Catiline: *You* want to help me? Julia Cicero: Yes. And, well, I… well, I want to learn.Cesar Catilina: And you think a year of… medical school gives you the right to plow through the riches of my Emersonian mind?Julia Cicero: Does that give me the right?Cesar Catilina: Yes.Julia Cicero: [scoffs] Does that give me the right?Cesar Catilina: Yeees!Julia Cicero: Does that give me the right?Cesar Catilina: YEEEEEEES!Julia Cicero: You have no idea about me! You think I’m nothing, just a socialite?Cesar Catilina: No, not nothing, but I save my time for people who can think. For science. And literature, and… architecture and art. You find me cruel, selfish, and insensitive? I am. I work without worrying about what happens to either of us. So go back to the clubuuub, learn everything, and stalk the kind of people you like.Julia Cicero: Good! I will.Cesar Catilina: Come back when you have more time!. The “Ultimate IMAX Experience” version of the film features a live actor asking questions during the filmed press conference.. My CommitmentWritten by Grace VanderWaalPerformed by Grace VanderWaalCourtesy of Columbia RecordsBy arrangement with Sony Music EntertainmentProduced and orchestrated by Kris Kukul. Full disclosure: This movie is a train wreck of epic proportions, a literal train wreck that goes off the rails, crashes, and then somehow catches on fire. It’s so bad, it’s almost brilliant, the kind of so-bad-it’s-brilliant nightmare that future cult fans will fall in love with. And you know what? I have so much respect for Coppola for this. The guy is a movie legend who just decided to throw caution (and coherence) to the wind and turn into a mad scientist. It’s a glorious, unfiltered mess from the mind of a genius who clearly stopped caring what people think. Bravo, you magnificent lunatic! šš».
