Emilia Perez follows four remarkable women in Mexico, each striving for her own happiness. Cartel leader Emilia enlists Rita, an underrated lawyer, to help her fake her death so she can finally live authentically as her true self. Carla Sofia Gascon talks about the two years of preparation that went into this difficult role in Jacques Audiard’s film, and about the two extremes of her own personality that she had to play as Emilia and Manitas. Jacques Audiard said that the idea of the musical was inspired by the novel’s chapter about a drug dealer who strives to change his personality. The French subtitle incorrectly writes the Indian city as “Delhi”.. Wasserman: So. Does your client have a name? In Tarantino’s remake of Latino Slant: La Bamba, BIG MOUTH, Jenna’s SPICE and Selena Shocks! (2024). El Alegato Written by Camille (as S. Dalmé), Clément Ducol and Jacques Audiard Performed by Zoe Saldana. A fairly pleasant film with two complex leads and two supporting roles that require excellent performers. The first two are played by Zoe Saldana and Carla Sofia Gascon, the second two are played by Selena Gomez and Adriana Paz. The quartet shared the award for Best Actress at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival. They deserved it. Saldana in particular is a revelation. From the previous films of the screenwriter and director Jacques Audiard, I saw four (“My Heart Was Beating”, “The Prophet”, “Rust and Bone” and “Brothers and Sisters”), each of which was memorable in its own way. None of them prepared me for this, so I take my hat off to him for not getting stuck in a genre rut. Emilia Peres has a lot of history and a lot of singing. When the singing is combined with Damien Jalette’s piercing choreography, the effect is breathtaking. Otherwise, the songs drag the film down. They are a light musical theater, they do not dig deep, therefore they do not meet the dramatic requirements imposed on them. They best show themselves in rap styles, where rhythm is the most important element. Emilia Perez’s moral seems to be that we can never let go of the past, change who we are or what we want. It’s a strangely dark vision for a musical.
